So remember my post on Housekeeping? I’m currently reading Gilead, another book by Marilynne Robinson. So far it’s ok, I mean it’s not life changing. There isn’t really a plot and that’s a little frustrating. But there are some good quotes so far, and I thought I would share:
“[...] a thing that does not exist in relation to anything else cannot itself be said to exist.”–This kind of trite philosophy always gets my pencil moving!
“I’ve thought from time to time it was the best thing in life, that little incandescence you see in people when the charm of a thing strikes them, or the humor of it. ‘The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart.’ That’s a fact.”–So whimsical and then suddenly so authoritative.
“I’ve been so full of admiration for existence that I have hardly been able to enjoy it.”–This is how I felt watching fireworks on the beach over 4th of July weekend.
And I learned a new word! Susurrus–full of whispering or rustling sounds. It actually sounds like what it means; it’s all rustle-y and full of S’s.
